_The Marikina City Library has transferred to a new location and reopens
September 1, 2010.
Marikina City Library, now situated at the three-storey building that
formerly housed the office of the Department of Education-Marikina along
V. Gomez Street in Brgy. San Roque, presently caters to broader and
more varied patrons with its wider selection of books and reference
materials.
Some 20,000 books and 300 CDs and DVDs that cater to different patrons
are accessible from the library’s diverse sections, most notable of
which is the special collection section which features information on
the shoe industry of Marikina, and Braille system reading equipment for
persons with visual disabilities. Ready reference materials are also
available in the Periodicals, Recreational, Teens’, Children’s, Laws and
Governance, Filipiniana, Rizaliana, and General Collection sections.
“We have designed the new library to be a visitor-friendly establishment
where anyone can do his research with ease and convenience,” said City
Librarian Vic Jayson Cruz.
An average of 200 patrons visit the Marikina City Library every day.
Ninety percent of them are college students doing
s doing school-related projects and research. Other visitors include elementary and
secondary students, senior citizens, professionals, and even out-of-school-youth. According
to Cruz, Marikina City Library only requires a patron identification card to be able to
borrow reading materials. “Believing that learning is a life-long process, the city
government is providing its constituents the right tool and avenue for learning. Our library
is open to everyone who would like to spend time doing worthwhile activities,” Mayor Del
De Guzman said. Marikina City Library was adjudged as one of the exemplary libraries in
the 2008 Search for the Outstanding City Libraries of Metro Manila. It is open from Monday
to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
